7 things Simi Fubara must do as he resumes from suspension, by Azuh Arinze

As Governor Simi Fubara of Rivers State steps back into office after a period of suspension, all eyes – within the state and across Nigeria – are fixed on how he will navigate this delicate new chapter.

His return is both a political reprieve and a formidable test of leadership. To consolidate his position and restore stability, the governor must act decisively on several fronts.

1. Mend Fences and Build Alliances

The political turbulence that led to his suspension underscores the need for broad-based reconciliation. Governor Fubara must therefore reach out to critical stakeholders: political heavyweights, members of the State House of Assembly, party leaders, and even those who opposed him. This is not about capitulation but about forging a working consensus. Peace-building meetings, private dialogues, and confidence-building gestures will help reduce the tension that has threatened governance in Rivers ever since he assumed office.

2. Prioritise Service Delivery

Citizens are eager for governance, not another endless political battle. The governor should as a matter of urgency refocus on tangible projects – roads, health infrastructure, education, and job creation – that directly touch the lives of the people. Visible progress will not only win back public trust but also shift the narrative from political infighting to developmental achievements.

3. Strengthen Institutional Frameworks

The recent crisis exposed gaps in the relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government. Fubara must work to fortify democratic institutions by respecting the rule of law and encouraging transparency in decision-making. Setting up bipartisan committees to address constitutional ambiguities could help avert future conflicts.

4. Communicate Clearly and Consistently

Effective communication will be critical, especially in this second coming. Through regular press briefings, town hall meetings, and transparent updates, the governor can reassure citizens that his administration is focused and united. A strong communication strategy will also counter rumours and misinformation that could inflame tensions.

5. Focus on Security and Economic Stability

Rivers State is the economic heartbeat of the Niger Delta. Ensuring security – especially in oil-producing areas – is paramount for investor confidence and economic growth. Collaborating with security agencies, local leaders, and community vigilante groups will also be key to maintaining peace and protecting vital infrastructure.

6. Lead with Humility and Vision

A suspension, no doubt, is a humbling experience. Governor Fubara as such must return with a renewed sense of service and vision, demonstrating that the ordeal has strengthened his resolve to govern inclusively. By presenting a clear roadmap for Rivers State’s development, he can inspire hope and rally the populace behind a common goal.

7. Avoid Another Nyesom Wike “Wahala”

Yes, some people may not like this, but the bitter truth is that as much as possible, Fubara should avoid Wike’s wahala for the second time. He should try to just manage him, complete his term and then move on. Reason being that Fubara’s reinstatement is more than a political comeback – it is actually an opportunity to reset the tone of governance in Rivers State. And by reconciling with rivals, prioritising the people’s needs, and strengthening democratic institutions, he can turn a period of crisis into a defining moment of statesmanship. The coming weeks, expectedly, will reveal whether he seizes that opportunity or not.
