The Lagos State Traditional Medicine Board (LSTMB) has recalled the licenses of Traditional Birth Attendants in the State who were recently certified and awaiting the General Hospital Immersion Programme.
According to a statement on Saturday, by the LSTMB, the Board’s Registrar, Prince Babatunde Adele disclosed this during a meeting held with stakeholders to communicate recent key decisions that have been taken, including a temporary suspension of all TBA training programmes pending further directives.
He said, “The General Hospital Immersion programme will now be conducted exclusively at flagship Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), Therefore licenses will be recalled, contingent upon the completion of the Immersion programme”
Prince Adele, who was represented by the Director, Research Training and Development at the Board, Mr. Hakeem Bello, noted that the measure underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing the quality of care provided by TBAs,
He also made it known that the Board will now mandate a four-year compulsory training programme at approved centres for all prospective TBAs before being licensed.
The Registrar further stated that the affected practitioners have been given a two-week grace period to submit their licenses and assured them of the Board’s full support throughout the restructuring process.
