The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says 432 persons lost their lives in various road crashes across the country between Jan. 15 and Feb. 15, 2025.

The corps said that 2,070 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the accidents.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, said this at a news conference to signalled the 2025 Ember Months public enlightenment and sensitisation.

The theme of the campaign is: “Taking Responsibility for Your Safety.’’

He said the figures were collated from 533 reported cases of auto crashes within the period under review.

Represented by Apaji Boyi, FRSC Sector Commander in Bauchi State, Mohammed attributed the crashes to drivers’ fatigue; overloading, conveyance of persons in haulage vehicles, traveling with fuel in plastic containers, violation of speed limit and traffic infringements.

According to Mohammed, the behaviour of  a driver is fundamental element in determining safety on the road.

“These infringements also include failure to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations, speed limit violations, driving under influence of alcohol and drugs, seat belt violations as well as using of phones while driving, among others.

“The campaign seeks to address road traffic infringements by drivers which are largely responsible for the previous road crash records,” he said.

Mohammed said the corps had deployed personnel to major highways and crash prone corridors across the country.

The corps, he said, would embark on free vehicle check exercise to ensure road worthiness, conduct rallies and motorcar carnivals nationwide, to raise awareness among motorists and the public.

While commending the Federal Government for its support, Mohammed urged the people to cooperate with its personnel to achieve safe road. (NAN)
