NiMet Rolls Out Electric Vehicles at Nigeria’s Five International Airports

Posted on November 4, 2025 by Admin

November 4, 2025

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has introduced electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations at the country’s five international airports; Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

This is the first use of EVs in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

In a statement on Tuesday, NiMet said the move supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes clean energy and climate resilience.

Each vehicle can travel up to 200 kilometres on a single charge, with dedicated charging stations installed at every airport.

The EVs will improve NiMet’s operations by providing quieter, more reliable transport, reducing fuel-related delays, and lowering costs.

With zero emissions, lower maintenance needs, and reduced noise, the agency can focus more resources on weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and aviation safety.

The initiative also advances Nigeria’s carbon credit goals and aligns with international sustainability standards.

NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, has championed the project as part of the agency’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in aviation.
