Sweden’s Health Minister Elisabet Lann has collapsed during a live press conference streamed on television and on the internet.
Elisabet Lann was named Sweden’s new appointed Minister for Health on Tuesday, September 9.
During a press conference later that same day, she fainted on stage while speaking alongside Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Christian Democrats party leader Ebba Busch. She was rushed to hospital and later returned to the conference and said the incident was due to a “blood sugar drop.”
“This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” she said.
The incident happened while Lann, 48, and other government officials, were taking questions from journalists. Lann slowly fell forward as she listened to another official speaking in the room, as seen in footage from SESVT shared by CBS News.
As she became unconscious, she fell forward and took down the translucent podium with her. The other politicians and a few journalists came to her side to assist her.
Journalists at the live event and her colleagues were seen rushing to help her after she appeared unconscious while addressing the audience shortly after she was named health minister.
“Swedish Health Minister Elisabet Lann suddenly collapsed during a press conference. She fell face-first onto the podium as people rushed in to give her immediate assistance,” an X user wrote while posting a video of the moment.
Footage captured Lann with her colleagues, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch was among those who rushed to help, placing Lann in the recovery position. She was later rushed out of the room, and the press conference was aborted.
Lann was a member of the team that presented the findings of their investigation on whether Swedish healthcare can be fully nationalised. She was appointed to the cabinet position after the resignation of her predecessor, Acko Ankarberg Johansson.
