…Call for justice, decisive action against election-related violence
Lagos State Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have issued a strong statement following an emergency meeting to address the current state of the nation and the political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, they criticized the incumbent government for failing to alleviate Nigerians’ hardships and reaffirmed ADC’s readiness to change the narrative in 2027, while calling for urgent constitutional, judicial, and electoral reforms, especially amendments to the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act, to ensure election integrity.
They decried the President’s exclusive power to appoint INEC leadership and Supreme Court justices, questioning the independence of these institutions.
A major concern raised was the escalating violence and intimidation against party members. They cited widespread threats and attacks reported from all 20 local government areas in Lagos, which have been reported to security agencies without effective resolution.
The statement specifically condemned a threatening speech by Mustapha Adekunle, aka Sego, Chairman of the Lagos NURTW, who allegedly incited violence against opposition members, including ADC faithfuls.
Referencing the 2023 elections where similar intimidation tactics were used to suppress voters, the Chairmen warned that such threats signal impending electoral violence.
They recalled an attack during a recent ADC coalition event in Alimosho, where party members were attacked and property worth millions destroyed actions they believe were coordinated with some elements of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Chairmen demanded Sego’s immediate arrest and prosecution as a demonstration that the rule of law applies equally to all Nigerians.
They appealed to the media and authorities to highlight these threats and ensure voters’ safety and election credibility in 2027.
The statement commended INEC’s ongoing voter registration efforts and urged more outreach to ensure all eligible Nigerians are registered and updated.
The Chairmen declared their commitment to reposition Nigeria towards greatness through peaceful and democratic means by 2027, while calling for vigilance, justice, and decisive action against election-related violence.
