The Osun Assembly on Monday passed the Islamic and Traditional Marriages Bill, aimed at registering and issuing marriage certificates for Islamic and traditional marriages conducted within the state.
The bill, entitled “Osun State Islamic and Traditional Marriages Regulation Bill 2025”, was sponsored on March 3, 2024 by Mr. Bamidele Lawal, a lawmaker representing Osogbo Constituency.
It was passed after the House Committees on Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism submitted its report.
Mr. Babajide Kofoworola, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, moved the motion for the third reading of the bill and was seconded by Mr. Taofeek Olayiwola, representing Ede South Constituency.
Similarly, the Assembly also passed the “Osun State Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Establishment Bill 2025” after its third reading.
Mr. Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the Assembly, said the bill would provide Islamic and traditional marriages with opportunities for documentation.
He said clean copies of the bills would be forwarded to Gov. Ademola Adeleke for his assent, and any adjustments or corrections to the bills would be done administratively.(NAN)
