The Ebonyi Police Command says it has detained one Ejike Ogwuru over alleged kidnap and defilement of two female minors, aged seven and 15.
The command’s Spokesman, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Friday.
Ukandu said the suspect would be arraigned at the end of the ongoing investigation.
He said: “The command received the report of the incident on Nov. 4
and the suspect is already in police custody.
“We are investigating the matter and have done necessary things by referring the children to gender clinic section of the national obstetrics fistula centre here for assessment and waiting for the report.”
Earlier, the Head of Umuota Village in Ikwo Local Government Area (LGA), Mr Romanus Igwe, told NAN that the matter was reported to him by the parents of the survivors on Oct. 22.
Igwe said that the girls were rescued on Oct. 23, following revelations by some villagers, who spotted Ogwuru with them in a hotel at Igeledeoha Eke Amagu Ikwo.
He said that the survivors’ parents told him that they went for evening church service and did not return.
According to him, both survivors hail from Ndufu-Umuota Village, Ekawoke-Umueka in Ikwo LGA.
He alleged that Ogwuru slept with the minors multiple times but denied only having sex with the 15-year-old.
The community head alleged that the suspect was into ritual acts, describing him as a native doctor.
“So, the community decided to bring the matter to police to take over,” Igwe said. (NAN)
